Kochi (Formerly Cochin) is one of those rare places where the twentieth century and ancient civilizations exist side by side. Kochi is a tropical port city whose history and culture is shaped by Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Arab, and Chinese spice traders of the ancient world. Kochi's first Jewish settlers arrived from Yemen and Babylon as early as 52 AD. Established as a city in 1341 AD Kochi truly came on the world map with the arrival of Vasco Da Gama in 1502. In 1662-63, the Dutch colonized Cochin and in 1814 came the British and took over Cochin. Its past is so rich that it has been called a museum city, with a history of Portuguese, Dutch, British and Jewish trading settlements. Cochin is heir to a remarkable cultural heritage and a place where many civilizations have rubbed shoulders.
