Jodhpur is dominated by two incredible architectural masterpieces - the imposing Meherangarh Fort and the equally staggering 20th century Art Deco Jewel - Umaid Bhawan Palace. Between them lies the city of Jodhpur, former capital of Marwar State, which retains much of its medieval character. It was founded in 1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha, chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs. Tall & proud Jodhpur men with their lovingly curled, caricature-big moustaches jostle on camels and carts through the sandy lanes of this delightful, slow paced city set on the edge of the Thar Desert. The Fort is now a fascinating museum and provides a theatrical backdrop to a magical evening on the Ramparts, with the twinkling, murmuring city sprawled at one's feet. The movie Jungle Book was filmed here.
