This complex of islands displays a range of monuments from its various religions, none more famous than the temple at Borobudur on the island of Java, the largest Buddhist temple in the world with over 2600 relief panels and over 500 statues of Buddha. Buddhists make pilgrimages to this intricate and beautiful place and so do tourists, often before daybreak to watch the sun rise between two mountains on the horizon, a truly sublime experience. For most visitors, though, Indonesia is all about Bali, an island of intoxicating beauty, from the beaches in the south to the rice fields, palaces and temples in the north, along with some of the most sybaritic resorts and best textile/antique/jewelry shopping in the world.
