A study in contrasts, this ancient realm veers between the manic pace of Tokyo with its packed streets, flashing neon, designer malls and towering luxury hotels to the pastoral calm of mountain hamlets with traditional inns known as ryokans and refuges with hot springs. The most visited city is Kyoto, which was the capital and home of the Emperor for 1100 years; spared the bombing during World War II, the city boasts seventeen UNESCO World Heritage sites among its scores of temples and shrines, including one particularly evocative one covered in gold leaf. In March, when the cherry trees bloom, the ponds in the delicately manicured gardens turn pink with fallen petals. At all times of year, traditional ceremonies are conducted as they have been for centuries.
