Kolkata (earlier known as Calcutta), India’s second largest city and the capital of West Bengal is arguably the world’s most controversial city. To some it has always been and remains an unequalled center of poverty, squalor and deprivation. To others it is the proud cultural and intellectual capital of India with an outstanding contribution to the arts, science, medicine and social reforming its past and a rich contemporary cultural life. Calcutta was once a stuccoed classical city of Palaces likened by contemporaries to St. Petersburg and Nash’s London. The climate attacked the buildings very quickly and left them a crumbling decaying legacy of Empire. Geoffrey Moorhouse calls Calcutta “a permanent exhibition of decaying English Classical Buildings”.
